some information about Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi is an Italian town of 7,418 inhabitants in the province of Lucca, Tuscany.

A seaside resort town overlooking the Ligurian Sea, it takes its name from the fort of the same name that stands in the center of the town, wanted by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo to defend the landing, and from the marbles that were transported from the Apuan Alps, not far away, to the wharf and then took the sea route.

Forte dei Marmi was the birthplace of Princess Paola Ruffo of Calabria, born in Villa Claudia, September 11, 1937, and from 1993 to 2013 Queen of Belgium. The mundane Versilia resort with numerous clubs, discos and the like is a summer hotspot for numerous national and international financial players, sports champions and showbiz personalities.

The resort is served by the Forte dei Marmi-Seravezza-Querceta station, located on the Genoa-Pisa line, which is in the center of Querceta, a hamlet of the municipality of Seravezza.

It is served by Trenitalia regional relations carried out under service contracts with the Tuscany Region also called “Memorario.”

Local public transportation is provided by bus routes operated by the CTT Nord company.

Between 1916 and 1951 there was a network of narrow-gauge steam tramways, the Versilia tramways, that connected Forte dei Marmi with Querceta, Seravezza, Pietrasanta, Pontestazzemese and Arni (Culaccio locality) which followed the route of today’s Provincial Road 9.

Since 1914, moreover, Forte dei Marmi was directly connected to Viareggio by the coastal tramway, a then-modern infrastructure, electrified at 600 V, which contributed significantly to the economic and tourist development of the coastal strip. A victim of severe damage suffered during World War II, the line was decommissioned and never restored.
